Curly, City Slickers, and the Myth of “One Thing”
Why Curly’s Famous Line Missed the Point (And What I’m Seeing Instead)
SPARK Insights™ Issue #0047
I met Drew earlier this year at Perry Marshall’s conference, where I was honored to emcee and speak. Later, he invited me onto his podcast — and just last week I had the privilege of sitting down with him for a Purpose Factor® assessment review.
And right there in the middle of our conversation, he told me a story that stuck.
He had been part of organizing a marriage conference at his church. The idea started with him — “What if we created something meaningful for couples right around Valentine’s Day?” He cast the vision, then let others handle the planning and execution.
On the day of the event, Drew walked in and was stunned. The space had been transformed. Every couple had a private room. The decorations were thoughtful. The whole environment felt alive.
He said, “This was the first time one of my visions came out better than I ever imagined it. Usually reality falls short of what I see in my head, but this time it surpassed it. I was overwhelmed — in the best way possible.”
That moment was more than a great event. It was his purpose in action — showing up as the builder of bridges, someone who creates spaces for connection, healing, and growth.
And it immediately reminded me of City Slickers.
The Myth of “One Thing”
If you’ve seen the movie, you probably remember the campfire scene. Billy Crystal’s character, Mitch, is exhausted and restless, in the middle of a midlife crisis, trying to figure out what life is really about.
Curly, the weathered cowboy, sits tall in his saddle-worn hat, pulls on a cigarette, and with his gravelly voice says, “Do you know what the secret of life is?”
Mitch shakes his head.
Curly holds up a single finger. “One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don’t mean s**.”*
The fire crackles, the horses shift, the wide open plains loom silent behind them. It’s one of those cinematic lines that lodges in your memory — simple, powerful, almost prophetic.
But as I sit with people right now — in real time — and walk them through their Purpose Factor reviews, I’m watching something completely different unfold.
The Source of Anxiety
One of the biggest anxieties I hear in these live reviews is the quiet fear: “What if I’m not living my purpose?”
It shows up as restlessness, self-doubt, even guilt that maybe they’ve missed “the one thing” they were supposed to do with their life.
And right there in the moment, I get to flip that script.
👉 You can’t help but live your purpose.
👉 It’s encoded into you.
👉 It leaks out of you in everything you do.
As one person told me this week:
“This connected a bunch of dots I’ve noticed for years. The line about building something bigger than me? Nailed it. It made obvious what feels alive in my work—and what I should hand off.”
Purpose in Action
These reviews are showing me — and my clients — that life isn’t about chasing one grand mission. It’s about noticing how your purpose is already spilling out everywhere.
Right now I’m hearing stories like:
Cooking a meal that carries the same purpose as leading a team — bringing order, creativity, and service.
Organizing paperclips echoing the deeper gift of helping people find clarity and structure.
A love of beauty and aesthetics shaping both home life and a thriving career.
Decades in a career being reimagined into new ways of serving in that same field.
One client summed it up in our call:
“This felt like a guide for where I’m going. It pegged me as the guy who brings order and cares for people, and gave me a simple way to keep serving and inspiring the teams I lead.”
Time and again, in the moment of review, people see that the way you do one thing is the way you do everything.
The Real Discovery
Your purpose isn’t just about one thing. It’s about discovering what’s encoded in you — and then expressing it in countless creative ways.
When that clicks — right there on the call — you can see the shift happen:
Anxiety drops.
Fulfillment rises.
Even “inconsequential” things suddenly feel consequential.
Curly was close, but here’s what I’m watching unfold every day:
Life is about discovering your purpose — and then finding endless ways to live it out.
Or as one subscriber told me after their review:
“This gave me language for what I’ve done for years—I build bridges. The best part is watching people cross and finally ‘get it.’”

P.S. A couple of quick notes…
Some of you have asked about becoming certified to offer Purpose Factor®. The answer is yes. You’ll first take the assessment, go through your own review with me, and then I can directly refer you to the team that handles certification. If you’re curious, just reply and ask for details.
Others have asked about referring people they know and love. The answer is of course! You can send me a message or forward them the link from this email. If you let me know you referred them, I’ll make sure there’s something special in it for both you and the person you send my way.
